Sermons on The Bible in Ancient History I & II

The Bible in Ancient History I & II is a legacy study Pastor Gene taught over several semesters at a Bible college back in 1993 and 1994. It is an extensive topical and historical study which explores the scriptural narrative of the Bible against the backdrop of real-world, ancient civilizations, empires, and archaeological contexts.

The series examines how major regional powers and ancient cultures (such as Assyria and other Ancient Near Eastern [ANE] empires) intersected with Old and New Testament history. It considers how historical and archaeological findings illuminate, contextualize, and often affirm events, people, and geopolitical struggles recorded in biblical Texts.

The series is heavily chronological, bridging the gap between historical secular records (such as ancient cuneiform tablets, royal decrees, and architectural ruins) and canonical Old and New Testament Scripture. The lessons traverse centuries of Ancient Near Eastern timelines, contextualizing the rise and fall of pagan empires alongside God’s covenant timeline with Israel.

The series seeks to understand overarching ancient regional superpowers—such as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome—to see how their political maneuvers influenced the historical backdrop of the biblical kings and prophets. To this end, it reviews concrete archaeological evidence which aligns directly with specific biblical battle accounts, ancient figures, and localized cultures.

The series describes how secular ancient history was directly shaped by Divine providence, fulfilling biblical prophecy through specific historical figures, such as Cyrus the Great or Alexander the Great. A primary focus is demonstrating the accuracy of Scripture against the historical record. For instance, the Hittite Empire, whose very existence was once doubted by historians, has now been fully validated through archaeological discoveries, its details perfectly matching the biblical record.

The series also compares biblical morality enucleated in God’s Law, with the vastly inferior legal structures of Israel’s surrounding pagan neighbors. It looks at Hammurabi’s Code, contrasting that famous Babylonian code of law with the Mosaic Law given to Israel, demonstrating how God’s Law uniquely elevated human value, morality, and spiritual accountability over this, and all other, contemporary Ancient Near Eastern legal codes.

A recurring structural framework used throughout the series is the Four Civilizations Paradigm, in which human history is viewed through the lens of four foundational civilizations. The teachings break down secular history into distinct eras that directly impacted the Jewish people and the early Christian church. For instance, it shows how God utilized empires such as Egypt, Babylon, Assyria and the Romans to discipline, protect, or scatter His people. It soon becomes evident that these historical transitions (e.g., Babylon falling to Persia, or the rise of the Roman Empire) seamlessly align with biblical prophecies, such as those found in the Book of Daniel.

The series also teaches how ancient audiences—and modern readers—can misunderstand these historical transitions. It emphasizes that, while Old Testament prophets often saw major historical events as clustered close together, history actually unfolds across long historical valleys and distinct dispensations.
