Sermons on 1 John
The full title of this teaching series is, The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Epistles of John, because it encompasses all three of John’s shorter epistles. The series focuses heavily on building spiritual assurance and the believer’s practical Christian walk. Rather than separating the Apostle’s final letters, the study considers them together to explore a number of important scriptural principles.
The concept of spiritual assurance and certainty forms the absolute core of the series. Pastor Gene structures these messages to emphasize that believers were never intended to live in a state of spiritual ambiguity. The teaching tracks John’s pastoral desire to ground his audience in concrete certainty regarding their salvation, faith, and standing before God. John’s first letter is not a speculative theological treatise, but as a manual for spiritual security, a measurable assurance. Rather than relying on fleeting emotions, the series highlights John’s structural ‘tests’ of true fellowship: the moral test of walking in light versus walking in darkness and keeping God’s commandments, the communal test of loving one’s brothers and sisters unconditionally as a direct reflection of God’s love, and the doctrinal test of rightly confessing that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh.
To properly unpack the themes of John’s letters, the series begins by establishing a foundational understanding of the early New Testament community. It introduces the distinct categories of the Jews, the Gentiles, and the God-fearers, and shows how Christian unity, love, and boundary-setting was applied to individuals coming out of distinct cultural and theological backgrounds.
The study of 2 & 3 John shifts the focus toward practical applications of truth and hospitality. The themes here contrast proper Christian behavior with that of false teachers, focusing on the obligation of local believers to adhere strictly to apostolic doctrine. It explores the importance of guarding the Church community against divisive individuals while supporting authentic traveling ministers.
2 John warns that truth must dictate charity. The series highlights that extending hospitality to false teachers who distort the doctrine of Christ is equivalent to participating in their wicked work. 3 John also warns. It warns against self-exaltation. It forcefully addresses the danger of leaders, like Diotrephes, who refuse godly authority and walk in pride.
