Reflection Questions: “I Am … the Bright Morning Star” (John 8.41, Isaiah 14.12, 2 Pet 1.16-2 & Revelation22.16)
by Pastor Gene
- Have someone read 2 Peter 1:16-21 out loud for the group. What are your first impressions? How is God’s Word like “a lamp shining in a dark place” – literally, a murky, dismal place? How will the “lamp” in verse 19 soon give way to the ‘day dawning’ and the ‘morning star rising’? To what does this ‘dawning’ and ‘rising’ refer? What is this ‘morning star’? How do you understand Jesus’ promise, “I will give to you the Morning Star?’ (see Revelation 2:28 & 22:16). According to verses 16b, 18, 19a, 20 & 21, why can we trust God’s “prophetic Word”?
- Why were Satan AND Jesus BOTH essentially called a ‘morning star’? What ideas does this fact evoke within you?
- I think one of the most terrifying things our Lord ever said is found in John 8:38. There He declared to His opponents that they have another father! Consider the following verses in the profound realization that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one”: 1 John 5:19, Ephesians 2:2 & Luke 4:6-7. Imagine it! The “whole world” which “lies in the power of the wicked one” includes everyone we know and love who doesn’t know the Lord. Pause. In your mind, put faces to this verse. Think of your unsaved family/friends/neighbors. Share your thoughts about this.
- Knowing Satan’s power over the lost – and all we’ve been delivered from – what should our response be? What is our hope in doing so? See Ephesians 5:6-11, 1 Peter 1:14-16.
- Have someone read 2 Timothy 2:21-26. How/why do you think self-cleansing presents the believer as “a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work”? What do you think “honorable use” means? What thoughts does the phrase, “ready for every good work” evoke in you? Verses 22-25a describes the self-cleansing Paul mentions in verse 21. Why are these things so important? Are they internal or external? What is the possible result of rendering one’s self “holy,” a vessel “useful to the Master”? (See verses 25b-26.) So, how can 2 Timothy 2:21 impact 1 John 5:19?
